At first glance you might think these are regular mittens. But take a closer look and you'll notice the thumb is open.
Then look at the palm side and you will see that these are indeed fingerless mittens.
How cool is that!
Pattern: Negative Space
Source: Knitting New Mittens and Gloves by Robin Melanson
Yarn: Reynold's Lopi
Needles: US 10 & 10.5 DPNs
The unique design of this "half-glove with a tongue," allows the back of the hand to be covered for warmth, while the fingers remain free.
There are many fun elements in the construction of these mittens, including provisional cast-on, I-cord bind-off and applied I-cord (the cuff is an I-cord coil).
Everything I needed to know about working a technique that was new to me was explained, so I didn't have to go to another source for help.
I look forward to knitting other mittens and gloves from this book. There are 28 designs to choose from...I like them all.
That looks like a great mitten pattern. I think I'd actually make them and I'm not a big mitten fan. The only change I'd want to make would be to add a little loop or pocket for one or two fingertips to hold the mitten in place a little better. Otherwise, it covers all of the areas where my hands usually get cold.
ReplyDeleteWhat a cool design!
ReplyDeleteWhat a clever design!
ReplyDeleteThose are some unique mittens. Handy for so many things...like being able to knit when your hands are cold.
ReplyDeleteWow. Those are really neat. What a great design. I would of never thought of it!
ReplyDeleteI agree, those look really cool. Are they any warmer than regular fingerless mitts?
ReplyDeleteHow very pretty they turned out with that color of yarn. You are such an advanced knitter Traci! I imagine there isn't anything you can't stitch up! Great job on this project!
ReplyDeleteI love them, they are so different. I definately want to make them.
ReplyDeleteThat is a very clever style and pattern! I like the idea of fingertips over, yet open! Beautiful yarn too...SUPER! Happy Days ((HUGS))
ReplyDeleteThose are really cool.
ReplyDeleteVery clever design - and great knitting. I love the color, too. These look like the perfect fingerless gloves for fishing trips.
ReplyDeleteThose are very interesting! I have never seen mittens like those before. They look like they are so easy to use!
ReplyDeleteI love ingenious designs by knitters who think outside the box! Thank you so much for sharing it with us, and introducing me to another mitten book! Just ordered it for myself - this year is a mitten year for my household, as I discovered my kids have outgrown most of my mitten stash. Funny how they do that! I'm looking forward to some interesting mitten ideas from this book for the mitten supply!
ReplyDeleteReally cool and warm looking mittens!
ReplyDeleteWhat a clever idea and thanks for the book info!
Very neat idea. I love learning new techniques when I knit. You did a great job.
ReplyDeletevery different, but interesting!
ReplyDeleteWell how cool is that pattern! I'm particularly interested in it because for whatever reason this year I've started having a real problem with really cold fingers. My job involves typing, so gloves don't work. I tried my Fetchings and they helped, but my fingers were still frozen. Hmm...
ReplyDeleteYou know just when you think you've seen it all somebody clever thinks of something new!
That's a great design for a fingerless glove. Fantastic!
ReplyDeleteThe last time I wore my fingerless gloves it was a bit cold. I was thinking how nice it would be to have fabric covering my hand. Cool!
Those are very cool! Much better than pulling my sweatshirt sleeves down over my hands:)
ReplyDeleteThose are so awesome. I have that book on hold at the library.. still waiting for it to come in. Ah maybe next winter. THose are just so cool!!

ReplyDeleteI made the "Gothic" pattern from that book for my daughter as a Christmas gift. She really liked them, and I learned the Channel Island Cast On in the process too!
ReplyDeleteLovely thumbless mittens, and your baby blanket is pretty as well.
