Kansas

Well, our vacation is almost over. We drove out of Colorado today and into Kansas. What a change of scenery. I thought it was flat where we live, but that was before I came here. I like it though. We've made a couple of interesting stops so far. A billboard advertising the largest craft store in the area got us to exit the interstate and drive into the small town of Brewster. I was looking for yarn of course, but they didn't have any. We did however, buy some lemonade and homemade cookies from some young girls who had set up a stand in their front yard. They were so cute.

Miles later, my husband spotted another billboard that advertised a quilt and yarn store so we got off at the next town to investigate. It was the wrong place, but we were told that there was a better store in the town of Gove called Gove City Yarns & Antiques.

The population of Gove is just over 100. It is very small, but the yarn store isn't. The selection of yarn is better than some stores I've been to in large cities. There are three or four rooms filled with yarn. A lot of premium stuff. Also, some spinning wheels and spinning supplies. I bought some 100% llama for a shawl. It's their own line of yarn. According to the label, it's produced by wheatfield llamas of Kansas. The perfect souvenir for a knitter. They don't have a website so you'll just have to drive to Kansas and see for yourself. You won't be disappointed.

Tonight we are at the KOA in WaKeeny. It's stormy. The people that work here said there were about ten tornados in the area in June. I've never seen a tornado in person. Hope I never do.

  1. We sat out a tornado in a car once. We went to town when one blew up out of nowhere. Stuff started being blown down the street, so we pulled into a parking lot and I started praying. An empty tractor trailer sitting right next to us was flipped over on it's side, but away from us. We watched it lift the shingles off the roof of the store whose parking lot we were sitting in. Eventually it was over. We made our way on downtown to where we had been headed. When we got there, their steel security door had been torn off the hinges, and they were just sitting inside. Sean went in and got two cigarettes, it was the only cigerette I have smoked in the last 7 years. It was a very nerve-wracking experience.

I have enjoyed your posts about your trip, it is almost as if I am on vacation with you. I am so glad you are having a great time!

Looks like you're really have a good time. What a great yarn shop find. What large city is that shop by? Is it anywhere near Topeka?
If you're going to be going through Lawrence you should stop by The Yarn Barn. I've heard great things. My grandparents live in Topeka and I will be visiting them in August or Sept. We're going to plan a trip to The Yarn Barn. Very fun!

Oh and yes Kansas is VERY flat. I grew up there. It is so boring to drive through. that pic you took of the sunflower is really gorgeous. Looks like you found some nice scenery.

  3. Jan,
That's the scariest story I've heard in a long time. God was watching over you during that tornado for sure. Fortunately we did not see a tornado in Kansas. However, the storm got so bad that it woke my husband up. He said the trailer was rocking from the wind and lightening was striking very nearby. Somehow I slept through the whole thing.

Hi, I found your website by doing a search for "gove kansas yarn"! I live in Manhattan, KS and will be driving to Denver, CO and am planning on stopping at that yarn store, I heard it was nice. We have a wonderful yarn store here in Manhattan, people always say it is the nicest they've seen. I'm not sure where you are heading but it's worth a side trip off of I-70. I haven't been to the Yarn Barn in Lawrence yet but plan to visit it soon.

    Have a great flat drive!
