Cupcake Hat

Image hosting by Photobucket
I had a lot of fun making these hats! Hope you do too.

Pattern: Cupcake Hat by Becky Veverka
Yarn: Caron Simply Soft (worsted weight)
Needles: US 7 DPN
Notes:

This pattern is written to fit a small child. Here's what I did to come up with three sizes that will fit babies for The Preemie Project:
For sizes 1-3 lbs(3-5lbs,6-8lbs)
CO 40(48,56)
Work ribbed cup color until 1 1/2"(1 1/2", 2")
Knit frosting color until 3 1/2"(4", 4 1/2") from cast on edge
Work decreases
I haven't decided if the 2" length of the cup color on the size 6-8 lb hat is right or if it would look better at 1 1/2".

It took a little time for me to figure out how to make what the pattern calls a nubble, because I was reading too much into the instructions and trying to make it harder than it is. Basically all you do to make a nubble is to cast on extra stitches by knitting into a stitch and placing the loop back onto the same needle (this is like the first cast on technique I learned when I started knitting), then bind off the required number of stitches. On the smallest hat I made a nubble from four stitches instead of five as instructed.

  3. I am overwhelmed. How cute. I may have to try some for myself. I've seen this pattern around the blog world, but frankly it is even cuter in a preemie size. You've done it again...

  10. Oh, my GOSH! Oh, Tracy, they're wonderful. I'll have to make one soon. Well, after the scarves for the girls' friends, the sweater for my friend's dog, the sari silk wrap, the wrist warmers for Brandi, the hats for Baby Manny, and my self-designed lace stole for the Knitting Olympics....

  18. I wanted to make one of these hats, but put it off because I didn't understand the nubs. Your directions simplified it for me so I was willing to try and was successful this time. Thanks so much. I am making the 1-4 yr size for my granddaughter first, but I would love to try your directions for premies or infants. I bet you could do 60-64 sts and 5" length for a 6-12 mos size too.

    Thanks again!

I made the cupcake hat and added "sprinkles" by making one straight stitch across in lots of different colors, all on the top of the hat. so cute! Now I need a pattern for a baby pumpkin hat. any ideas? Jill Kaplan

  20. Jill,

Susan B. Anderson has a pumpkin hat pattern in her book Itty-Bitty Hats.

I am a new knitter and I am trying to make this hat. But I a confused about a certain part. I have finished the cup part, I chose dark brown. And almost finished the frosting part (I chose cream) Now the pattern begins decreasing and the it tells me to "switch to CC" Why would I want to switch to a contrasting color? Isn't the cupcake created with three colors---brown, cream and red for the cherry? Why do I need to add a contrasting color? I don't notice a contrasting color on the frosting portion of your hat or the hats from lady who created the pattern. Could you please help?

  24. It's been so long since I knitted this hat that I had to go back and read the pattern. It does say to "switch to CC." CC might stand for contrasting color or cupcake color. However, I did not change colors here. I think this instruction might be an error in pattern writing that was missed by the designer. You will have to ask her to be sure, though.

    Hi Tracy,
Thanks so much for your response! I do love your blog and look forward to more knitting. Your explaination of knitting the nubble really helped in this pattern. Thanks for all your help!

Instead of the numble just add a crochet every other stich after you get it done...I single crocheted 7 and hooked to everyother stich and looks great. I could never get the numble thing.

OMG those cupcake hats are the bees knees! My chihuahua Sprinkles will look fantastic in one of these numbers? Do you know how I could make some ear holes for my precious baby?

Maybe you can use it to figure out how to modify the cupcake hat.

I'm glad you added the instruction that the nubble is basically casting on, then binding off. I couldn't get it at first, then the lightbulb came on and I got it! It's fun, but I can't wait to get to the top frosting. I bought some white cotton yarn that has dabs of pastel colors here and there which will make it look like sprinkles (I hope). I also saw another one on a web site that is made to look like those Hostess choocolate cupcakes with the white squggles on top - cute!

I made this hat too but form a different pattern than yours, although the outcome is very similar. Love the pattern and the hat is adorable, I toio had an issue with the nubbles but after reading and re reading the instructions got them down without too many problems. Well worth the effort and lots of compliments on the finished product.
