Saturday was World Wide Knit in Public Day. As it turned out, I had a chance to do a little public knitting while waiting for John to get his hair cut.
I worked on socks which is my take-along knitting. I keep them packed in my bag and ready to go, just in case.
I found this small backpack at REI last year for about $20. It has turned out to be the perfect knitting bag: tiny in size, but roomy enough for yarn, needles, snacks, pattern books, magazines, etc.
I've been known to really load it up for a flight out of town. The zippers assure that nothing will accidentally fall out when stowed under the airplane seat. And, the outer zippered pocket is perfect for small gadgets like scissors, retractable tape measure, row counter and things like that. The light colored interior is a bonus, making it easy to see what's inside. I love this bag!
The socks I'm working on are the basket weave rib pattern from Sensational Knitted Socks. However, I decided not to carry the stitch pattern down the foot, but to knit stockinette instead. And for the heel, I'm using my favorite short row technique: Priscilla A. Gibson-Roberts style. I'm all in favor of mindless knitting, especially when it comes to socks.
That is a great bag and a nice sock, too! I KIPped on Saturday but alas, no documentation happened.
ReplyDeleteThat bag does look handy. I love the color of the sock, and it's a nice pattern also. I really like Jawoll. My hubby has a pair that's 6 years old, and even with weekly wear, are holding up wonderfully!
ReplyDeleteThese socks are gorgeous. I love the texture and depth of the pattern. I am with you on the midless sock, in particular when knitting in public, like on the subway, and people often ask me questions about what I am knitting.
ReplyDeleteJust the other day, I actually showed a lady how to use 2 circulars to knit socks. I kept hoping the whole time, that we could finish before either of us had to get off the train.

Love the color and the pattern on the socks. I love KIPing. It's one of my favorite things to do. Now I'm off to look for my copy of Sensational Knitted Socks and check out that pattern...
ReplyDeleteThat is a perfect bag for travelling - it's all about having a good knitting supply!
ReplyDeletethe sock looks soft! and i love the bag...the perfect bag is one of those things that elude me :o(
ReplyDeleteLovely socks! I'd forgotten all about Knit in Public Day. As it turned out, though, I did KIP on Saturday anyway - in the lobby of our hotel in Chicago, while sitting around laughing and cutting up with my two sisters, beloved sister-in-law, and lovely grown nieces.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comments on blue sweater - Blogger somehow prevents me from replying directly, but the wool is a New Zealand yarn called "Buttons" - I just love it, with the bright little flecks. A very happy yarn for happy projects.
I love the colour of your socks. I've tried the short row toes...and found it very frustrating....so...I sort of stalled before making it to the heals....I just really don't find the short rows that easy...mine look funny...and I can't figure out how to properly pick up my wraps to not leave ugliness behind... :-( so...I started a new pair of socks..ha! with my regular old, toe up, heal flap...pattern...I will try to tackle the short rows again some other time....
ReplyDeleteRight now ...I'm more interested in tractors :-D
And in case you can't find it locally, here's a link for the "Buttons" yarn by Magic Garden. Quite a few links for it pop up on Google, but you can have a closer look here:
