E is for Egg
My love of brown eggs goes way back to when I was a little girl and lived next door to a man who raised chickens in his backyard. My sister and I would often feed the chickens. Mom would give us each a handful of dry dog food and we would drop it one piece at a time through the fence. The chickens loved it and the man didn't mind.
Occasionally he would come to our house with a carton or two of fresh eggs--always brown. The eggs we bought at the store were white, so in my young mind, fresh eggs were brown and store-bought were white.
Still to this day I prefer brown eggs. They are more special than white ones to me, so that's what I buy. Even though nutritionally and taste-wise there is no difference, I'll pay extra for them just because of a happy childhood memory.
Childhood memories are always worth the extra $$.
ReplyDeleteAround here brown eggs are all that's available unless it's Easter and then the stores are loaded with white ones. I buy my eggs from my friend Sharon and her chickens lay blue and green ones!

ReplyDeleteMy Grandma Josephine always had chickens and they laid mostly brown eggs too. I prefer them to this day as well.

ReplyDeleteWe buy mostly brown-egg laying hens for this exact reason - people tend to associate white eggs with the grocery store and brown eggs as more fresh and wholesome. Plus I think they're pretty, they tend to have variations in color and such.
ps. I FINALLY got your pattern that you won in the mail a couple days ago. I threw in a few little goodies for you as well. : )
I like brown eggs, too. We used to buy them fresh from a local farmer when we lived in NY, and in VA a friend sold us brown eggs from her hens.

ReplyDeleteI guess that explains my preference for brown eggs, too. My daddy always raised chickens when I was young, as did one of my grandmothers. There was nothing quite so thrilling to me as a tot as to get to collect the eggs from the henhouse. There was something almost magical about finding those eggs, especially the ones laid somewhere other than than on the hen's nests! :-)

ReplyDeleteHa Ha, another connection between us. I pay a little extra to buy brown eggs too...cagefree ones, although I'm not so sure that that means they're as happy as I imagine they are.
ReplyDeleteThe Edelweiss Restaurant does sound like a fun experience. My husband's family is German, so I always want to incorporate a little German culture into our lives, but German food is sooooo heavy.
I'm partial to brown eggs too, they don't show up as well after dark when your trying to sneak some out of the chicken coop.

ReplyDeleteNothing better than farm fresh eggs. We used to have chickens and I would get at least a dozen per day. Because I had so many my family and friends always had a fresh supply.
