How I Knit a Basic Hat for a 3-5 lb Preemie
Yarn: Worsted Weight
Needles: Size US 7 (4.5 mm) DPNs
CO 48 sts.
Divide stitches evenly on three needles. Join in the round.
Brim:
K1, p1 for 5 rounds.
Hat:
Knit each round, changing yarn as desired to create stripes, until hat measures 4" from CO edge.
Decreases:
*K6, k2tog, repeat from * to end of round.
*K5, k2tog, repeat from * to end of round.
*K4, k2tog, repeat from * to end of round.
Continue in this way until 6 stitches remain.
Finishing:
Cut yarn 6" long and pull through remaining stitches.
Pull tail to the inside and weave in all ends.
Top with pom-pom.
Using yarn from my Cotton Ease stash (discontinued colors), I was able to come up with several combinations of colorful stripes.
Cherry Red and Vanilla
Bubble Gum and Strawberry Cream
Vanilla, Mint, Popsical Blue and Sugarplum
Candy Blue, Banana Cream and Blueberry (? missing the label)
Pistachio, Ice Blue and Strawberry CreamAs you can see, the possible combinations are many, limited only by imagination and yarn. And so far, I still have plenty of yarn; imagination is only slightly used up.
I may need you to knit me up some lures one day!

ReplyDeleteGreat! Who do you donate to? I wonder if my local hospital has some type of program or need. Hmm, I may check into it. I know when my daughter was born on Christmas she was given a stocking (large enough for her to be in) and a knitted hat of christmas colors. She wasn't a premie either. Hmm...my wheels are turning.

ReplyDeletePerfect way to use up the bits and pieces of that yarn stash. Right now I've got some wool on the needles to make up a man size hat. Preemie hats are almost instant gratification and when you add the fun of color combinations it is even better. Beautiful work:~D
ReplyDeleteYour hat's colors remind me of cupcakes still. They're in yummy colors. I know that they must be uplifting to parents who are so worried about their preemie when their baby has on such a "happy" little hat. And they know someone was thinking of them, in a way.

Your basic premie hat is working out to be the same size as the newborn hat I did last night. Actual the hat is the same except my decreases were different. Am I on track? Do you think your hats would fit a newborn too?
ReplyDeleteI don't know why I'm afraid to use dpns but I knit for charities and the preemie hats and booties are dear to my heart (my first grandbaby was born in the 5th month and too small to stay very long)
