I've traded in my cupcake knitting obsession for the time being to obsess on another favorite of mine--preemie hats.
How I Knit a Basic Hat for a 3-5 lb Preemie
Yarn: Worsted Weight
Needles: Size US 7 (4.5 mm) DPNs
CO 48 sts.
Divide stitches evenly on three needles. Join in the round.
Brim:
K1, p1 for 5 rounds.
Hat:
Knit each round, changing yarn as desired to create stripes, until hat measures 4" from CO edge.
Decreases:
*K6, k2tog, repeat from * to end of round.
*K5, k2tog, repeat from * to end of round.
*K4, k2tog, repeat from * to end of round.
Continue in this way until 6 stitches remain.
Finishing:
Cut yarn 6" long and pull through remaining stitches.
Pull tail to the inside and weave in all ends.
Top with pom-pom.
Using yarn from my Cotton Ease stash (discontinued colors), I was able to come up with several combinations of colorful stripes.
As you can see, the possible combinations are many, limited only by imagination and yarn. And so far, I still have plenty of yarn; imagination is only slightly used up.
I may need you to knit me up some lures one day!

Those look so soft and snuggly for the little ones! I really like the vanilla, mint, popsicle blue, and sugarplum one!
ReplyDeleteThey are so colorful and sweet! Nice work.
ReplyDeleteI love the stripes. Seems like lately you've been enjoying colors!
ReplyDeleteT...I love it when you post the pics along with the pattern! It helps me to see the different ways I can do some stripes too!
ReplyDeleteWe FINALLY got some rain here in the Hill Country...sorry I sent it your direction.
Hugs
Those hats are just adorable and I love the colors!!!
ReplyDeleteSweet and practical! Do you give them to specific individuals or donate to a hospital or Dorcas Society or something else?
ReplyDeleteGreat! Who do you donate to? I wonder if my local hospital has some type of program or need. Hmm, I may check into it. I know when my daughter was born on Christmas she was given a stocking (large enough for her to be in) and a knitted hat of christmas colors. She wasn't a premie either. Hmm...my wheels are turning.
ReplyDeleteTracy, I probably sound like a broken record to you by now, but I just love seeing your pictures! Whether it's socks on an ocean's beach, or a stack of preemie hats, you always manage to photograph in such an appealing way.
ReplyDeleteThose hats are as adorable as the cupcakes. The pattern is timely for me, too, since I seem to be on a teeny hat knitting kick right now.
These look super and I'm sure will bring comfort to babies and their families! What a great way to use up little bits of yarn left from other projects!
ReplyDeleteI love the color combination that you used on your hats. Since I have been making rolled-brim hats for newborns, I saved this pattern to try on a new batch. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteThat looks pretty easy, maybe I'll give it a whirl.
ReplyDeletethey might not be stuffed, but they still resemble cupcakes...I'd say you just took your obsession up a notch. :-)
ReplyDeleteCute premie hats! Wish I knew you when I had my twins premie! :o)
ReplyDeleteThey are so sweet...that would be a great way to use up some odds and ends of cotton ease I have sitting around.
ReplyDeletePerfect way to use up the bits and pieces of that yarn stash. Right now I've got some wool on the needles to make up a man size hat. Preemie hats are almost instant gratification and when you add the fun of color combinations it is even better. Beautiful work:~D
ReplyDeleteYour hat's colors remind me of cupcakes still. They're in yummy colors. I know that they must be uplifting to parents who are so worried about their preemie when their baby has on such a "happy" little hat. And they know someone was thinking of them, in a way.
ReplyDeleteThey are wonderful as always. The little heads that will be wearing them will love the warmth both from the yarn and from your heart.
ReplyDeleteOh, great hats! Love all of the color combinations!
ReplyDeleteI love your hats, the color combinations are great.
ReplyDeleteBless you and your willingness to share your gifts ~ not only with the blessed little ones who will wear the warmth you provide, but also with all of us.
ReplyDeletevery nice work

Your basic premie hat is working out to be the same size as the newborn hat I did last night. Actual the hat is the same except my decreases were different. Am I on track? Do you think your hats would fit a newborn too?
ReplyDeleteI don't know why I'm afraid to use dpns but I knit for charities and the preemie hats and booties are dear to my heart (my first grandbaby was born in the 5th month and too small to stay very long)
ReplyDeleteIs there a way to make your lovely hats on 2 needles?
Thank you so much for all you do!!!

Marny,
DeleteYou can use any two-needle preemie hat pattern that you like and add stripes as desired. Here are links to two patterns that I've used before:

This looks fun and easy. I knit up some hats for my chemo center this month. It seems like it would be a fun change to make some preemie hats.
