I is for Ice Cream

Yum!

A few ice cream memories:

*My granddaddy ate ice cream every evening--vanilla ice cream in a cone. He was never overweight. It's the only thing I ever saw him "cook" in the kitchen, though he said he knew how to make a good fried egg sandwich.

*I remember helping Dad make homemade ice cream the old fashioned way. My sisters and I would take turns sitting on the blanket-covered ice cream maker to weight it down while Dad cranked the handle. And when the ice cream was cranked as much as it could be cranked, we'd get our first taste right from the dasher.

*Growing up, we always had a big plastic tub of Borden French Vanilla Ice Cream in our freezer. I don't remember any other flavors, though we often had fresh fruit or chocolate syrup for toppings. Mom bought a set of banana split dishes so we could have banana splits at home, just like the ones she used to make when she worked at the drive-in as a teenager.

*I liked the buckets the ice cream came in as much as the ice cream. I think they were gallon-sized or maybe larger, with a tight fitting lid and a red handle. We saved them to use for other things, like berry picking and trick-or-treating at Halloween. They could sure hold lots of dewberries and candy.

*John and I took our kids on a trip to Vermont and stayed at a B&B that stocked the freezer with Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream. The kids loved the fact that you could go to the kitchen anytime you wanted and eat ice cream. Unfortunately, we had to cut our stay short because the well water in the house smelled strongly of sulfur. When you nearly pass out from the foul odor each time you take a shower, it's time to move along, even if the ice cream is good.

One of the perks of this post was getting to eat the prop after the pictures were taken...and...well...it took a few tries until I got just the right shots...

Yum!

  1. Nothing is better than homemade ice cream! All the effort of cranking makes it even more appreciated and delicious.

Your photos made me hungry for ice cream. Sadly, I rarely eat ice cream any more.

  2. Hey! We think alike;-)
Home made is the best, but I'm too lazy to make my own.
My mother always bought ice cream in buckets...she had lots of kids. They were handy!

Home made persimmon ice cream is the best! Every one at church begs my husband to make it for ice cream socials.

  5. Yours is the THIRD blog this morning that has posted I is for Ice Cream. It must be some sort of conspiracy to get me to eat ice cream.

  6. We have a small ice cream maker that is so easy the kids can make the ice cream. Hmm, if it wasn't raining right now I'd really be in the mood. My favorite is a chocolate peanut butter homemade ice cream. I planted a mint julep & peppermint plant. I should find out how to use those herbs for ice cream.
Sidenote- I finished the soaker last night, I'll block it but I think I have to make another one. One seems like an incomplete gift even if I don't know her. :)And it really is quick.

  7. This is my Hubby's favorite I word! :o) I love homemade ice cream, even just plain vanilla but it is also good with fresh in season fruits. Neat to hear your family history of ice cream!

  9. LOL! When I looked at the top picture, my first thought was to say "lucky you, what a tasty looking photo prop!".

I have fond memories of a cold behind when I was young and the family made ice-cream. I was always the one to get stuck sitting on the freezer. It did have it's perks, though, for as you mentioned, that first taste from the dasher was always the best!

  10. Mmmmm, Ice cream to start the day! (I noticed your 5 am posting time) Sounds like the breakfast of knitting champions! I get my ice cream by the 1 1/2 gallons from Schwans. It's pretty good. When I really get a craving I go for the mint chocolate chip from Baskin Robbins. I have not had any ice cream in months because of the no sugar thing..Agh!

  11. I was just telling Russ that I didn't feel very good because sans our kids we had White Castle burgers for supper. What's the perfect way to top that off? Walk down to get an ice cream cone at the neighborhood Rite Aid!!

  12. I'm visiting your blog via http://findingmyknitch.blogspot.com/ Renna and see that you were also born in the Sooner state. Nice to meetcha'! I enjoyed reading your ice cream post and like Renna it also reminded me of a cold BE-hind. My grandmother always made banana ice cream for the fourth of July. Mmmm.......yummy memories.

Love your knitting, and I hope to attempt socks in my post-homeschooling future.
