Red, White and Blue

You've probably already figured out that knitting for preemies is a passion of mine. I never get tired of it. There is nothing more rewarding than using your talents to serve others. Try it and see what I mean.

Made in America

Yarn: Worsted weight in red, white and blue (I used Bernat Satin).
Needles: US 7 (4.5 mm) DPNs
Gauge: 5 sts/inch
Size: Preemie

Cast on 48 sts. Divide stitches on three needles. Join in the round, being careful not to twist.

1-5: K1, p1 (red)
6-10: K (white)
11: K (blue)
12: K (alternate 1 st. blue, 1 st white, beginning with blue)
13: K (blue)
14: K (alternate blue and white, beginning with white)
15-17: Repeat rnds 11-13
18-22: K (white)

Decreases (red):
*K6, K2tog, repeat from *
*K5, K2tog, repeat from *
*K4, K2tog, repeat from *
*K3, K2tog, repeat from *
*K2, K2tog, repeat from *

6 stitches remain.

Cut yarn, leaving tail, and pull through remaining stitches.
Pull tail to the inside and weave in all ends.

I hope the hats and patterns I've shared this week will inspire you to knit your own red, white and blue creations. Start with this basic recipe and plug in a design of your own.

I'd love to see what you come up with.

  1. I want to express how much I have enjoyed your show and tell this week. Your patterns are so pure. I love them!
BTW, how many have you made this week? Also do you donate all of the hats to one hospital or to an organization? I'm just curious.
    Have a wonderful weekend!

  2. I made most of the preemie hats last week. They are quick to knit (1 1/2 hours each), so I was able to get a pile of them finished: 9 patriotic preemie hats and 6 from other cute patterns.

  3. Where do you donate your hats?

  4. I'm sending these to Hannah's Knitsters, a group at John's place of employment. In the past I've donated to The Preemie Project, both the Iowa and Michigan chapters. Check out the links on my blog under Charity Knitting.

  6. I have definitely been inspired by you this week. I've been itching to get started knitting some of these, but a shopping trip for navy yarn is in order first.

It is so nice of you to share your many patterns. You give, not only in the hats you make and donate, but also by giving of your talent in sharing the patterns with us. God bless you!

  7. You have inspired me - now I must tackle double point needles - then I will be on my way!!! These hats are so precious. You are such a generous, caring person and I know each tiny baby will love his or her hat.

  9. Hi, Tracy, I love your hats, as usual. What a great idea...seems like it could morph into something even larger...pumpkin hats at Halloween, Pilgrim hats at Thanksgiving:)

Our high schoolers are required to put in a certain number of community service hours their senior year. I was thinking that this year, I might try to start a knitting group at our high school and they could maybe get good enough that they could do some charity knitting that would count toward their community service hours.
