I couldn't send Mark hand-knit mittens without making something for Sue, also.
Free Pattern: Keyhole Scarf
Yarn: Ballybrae Knitting Worsted by Brunswick (discontinued)
Color: Sky Blue Tweed
Needles: US 10
I'm modeling the scarf before it was washed. After washing it, the stitches straightened out nicely, which was good. But as I was laying it out to dry, I noticed a big mistake. It seems when making the keyhole, I bound off 12 stitches, but only cast on 10 on the next row. I was two ribs short of the right number on the bottom six inches of the scarf.
I don't know if Sue would have ever noticed this mistake, but I couldn't live with it. After the scarf was dry, I ripped back to the keyhole and fixed it.
This rustic tweed yarn is some I inherited from my mother-in-law. I think she would like the fact that one daughter-in-law knit with her yarn for another daughter-in-law.
It's almost like she's giving this gift too and that makes it extra special.
PS. Received word from Mark that the mittens fit.
The scarf is beautiful and a great use of yarn from your MIL.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure Sue would never notice that "mistake"...certainly can't tell from your good photos! That is a very nice, simple scarf...and the yarn is perfect for it. Oh, those mittens were terrific--so glad they worked out! :o) Happy Days ((HUGS))

What a nice simple scarf. I love it. I will have to check out this pattern. Thank you for the link!
ReplyDeleteEven though Sue probably wouldn't have noticed, I would have done the very same thing. It would have bugged me every time I saw the scarf. It looks really nice. Great to know that the mittens fit!
ReplyDeleteHow thoughtful to send something for them both! The scarf is beautiful and the mittens fit! Yay!
ReplyDeleteWow! We both made little scarves! I like yours' as well! It's great to hear from you, too.
ReplyDeleteI think non-knitters tend to be obvlivious of knitters mistakes, but I'm like you, I'd have to redo it, too. Sometimes I wish I could have a more "eh..whatever" attitude toward mistakes which don't really take away from the item, but I can't. It will bug me to no end until I finally decide to rrrriiip it! ;-Þ
ReplyDeleteThe scarf is really pretty, and I love that yarn. I love neckwarmers and keyhole scarves. I get so bored with the monotony of knitting full length scarves. I lean toward instant gratification! ;-)
Very glad the mittens fit! The scarf is wonderful, of course. As a person who has OCD issues, I understand not being able to leave it with the mistake (I'm not saying you have OCD, just that I do...). I think it looks beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI inherited a ton of yarn, fabric and other craft supplies when my Mom passed away. Every time I make something for my kids or grandkids I feel like we're both giving them the gift.
ReplyDeleteWonderful way to pass the love along!!! I'm sure she'll love it:~D
ReplyDeleteLove the wool you used. Scarfs are such nice gifts. Lovely.
ReplyDeleteGreat looking scarf! I would have done the same thing - ripped it out and redo.
ReplyDeleteIt would bug me too much!
The scarf is lovely and so is the yarn. I really like the little flecks of color and I also love the history and family connections.
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteI went to see the news and congratulated the work is beautiful !!!!!
A great week,
Sandra Coatti kisses ........
the scarf is stunning, and I agree with Carole, a great use of the gifted yarn from MIL. very sweet!
ReplyDeleteI also admire your repair job - good for you. That is a very loving SIL!
It's lovely! How good of you to knit for Sue, too. Love your photos on your other site. It's a joy to see your other expressions in photography. I feel so lucky to know you virtually.
ReplyDeleteYou can bet that Priscilla has had a smile on her face for a while watching you knit! What a neat gift! I am sure Sue will get good use of it this year!
ReplyDeleteI have a couple of hanks of Ballybrae in my stash! Who knows what it will become?!
ReplyDeleteAnd... I would have ripped back, too.
I'm glad the mittens fit!
I love the idea of giving a part of your mother-in-law in this gift. I fear though that I would've just let it be. Finding an error and fixing it while knitting is one thing, but I don't know that I'd be able to go back and take something out. Good on ya!
ReplyDeleteHow sweet of you to knit that for your sil. I'm sure she's going to love it. I love the fact that the yarn had that unique family connection, that makes the gift even more special.
ReplyDeleteIt's lovely! I would so love a scarf like that. Lucky for Sue.
ReplyDeleteI don't know about the placement of the stitches but the Love that went into both the scarf and mittens was hard to miss! Sue is thrilled with her new scarf and I can report that the mittens have been field tested in below zero temps and have not been found wanting in any respect. Thank you again for your very special gift to us .
ReplyDeleteWhat a greaty way to share the family love, and use up stash.
ReplyDeleteYour scarf reminds me of why I consider knitting more than just a craft or a hobby. There are so many ways you connect with people when you give a knitted gift. They know that your gift took time and that you were thinking aboutt them while you were knitting it. For the yarn to be inherited from your mother-in-law adds to the gift even more.
ReplyDeleteLovely scarf! I have to stop visiting you, I haven't been very diligent with my knitting and now I feel quite guilty:-)
