Color: Sky Blue Tweed
Needles: US 10
I'm modeling the scarf before it was washed. After washing it, the stitches straightened out nicely, which was good. But as I was laying it out to dry, I noticed a big mistake. It seems when making the keyhole, I bound off 12 stitches, but only cast on 10 on the next row. I was two ribs short of the right number on the bottom six inches of the scarf.
I don't know if Sue would have ever noticed this mistake, but I couldn't live with it. After the scarf was dry, I ripped back to the keyhole and fixed it.
This rustic tweed yarn is some I inherited from my mother-in-law. I think she would like the fact that one daughter-in-law knit with her yarn for another daughter-in-law.
It's almost like she's giving this gift too and that makes it extra special.
PS. Received word from Mark that the mittens fit.

ReplyDeleteEven though Sue probably wouldn't have noticed, I would have done the very same thing. It would have bugged me every time I saw the scarf. It looks really nice. Great to know that the mittens fit!

ReplyDeleteI think non-knitters tend to be obvlivious of knitters mistakes, but I'm like you, I'd have to redo it, too. Sometimes I wish I could have a more "eh..whatever" attitude toward mistakes which don't really take away from the item, but I can't. It will bug me to no end until I finally decide to rrrriiip it! ;-Þ

Very glad the mittens fit! The scarf is wonderful, of course. As a person who has OCD issues, I understand not being able to leave it with the mistake (I'm not saying you have OCD, just that I do...). I think it looks beautiful.

I love the idea of giving a part of your mother-in-law in this gift. I fear though that I would've just let it be. Finding an error and fixing it while knitting is one thing, but I don't know that I'd be able to go back and take something out. Good on ya!

ReplyDeleteI don't know about the placement of the stitches but the Love that went into both the scarf and mittens was hard to miss! Sue is thrilled with her new scarf and I can report that the mittens have been field tested in below zero temps and have not been found wanting in any respect. ReplyDeleteYour scarf reminds me of why I consider knitting more than just a craft or a hobby. There are so many ways you connect with people when you give a knitted gift. They know that your gift took time and that you were thinking aboutt them while you were knitting it. For the yarn to be inherited from your mother-in-law adds to the gift even more.
