Lacy Gown and Hat
This bereavement set is for the Emmazing Grace Foundation. Candy started this foundation as a way to honor the memory of her daughter Emma Grace. Through this foundation, families that experience the tragedy of the loss of a child are assisted financially to help ease the burden of burial costs. Bereavement clothing is also provided to hospitals and funeral homes.
Some people find it too emotionally difficult to make bereavement clothing for the little ones. For some reason, this is something I can do. I think it's because I have heard the stories of so many who have lost preemies and the challenge they experienced when trying to find clothing to fit their baby. Candy shared why she makes bereavement clothing in her January 9, 2007 post (scroll down the page). Her story inspires me to help others.
Patterns: Jenny's Tiny Knitted Burial Gown and Lacy Hat
Yarn: Caron Simply Soft Baby Sport
Needles: US 5
Size: 1-3 lbs
The way the gown pattern is written is confusing in places to me, but it can be figured out. Just be sure to increase the stitches to 72 before beginning the skirt. The stitches will be arranged on the needles as follows:
10 stitches, stitch marker (SM), 16 stitches, SM, 20 stitches, SM, 16 stitches, SM, 10 stitches
Before I send this off, I'll knit a pair of booties to go with it. I will probably use this pattern.

The dress is so, so sweet! And so small! It makes me cry just to think that someone needs it. It's such a thoughtful gift for someone.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful gift to give.
ReplyDeleteThe outfit is really very sweet and how wonderful for a mother to want to make something positive from something so sad. Too bad more people in this world don't think more of others than themselves.
ReplyDeleteI love it!! Thank you sooo very much! What a wonderful gift you have given to the family of a precious baby girl! It is truly stunning. Hugs, Candy
ReplyDeleteIt's lovely, very sweet. I had trouble too when I first started making bereavement items, but when I thought about it I realized that these items probably are even more meaningful to the families who receive them. My son (thankfully born big and healthy) received a hat when he was born that had been knitted by a volunteer, and I was quite touched that someone went to the trouble, but it was, after all, just a hat and quickly all of the other wonders of having a baby eclipsed that gift. To families who don't have their precious baby with them, these garments may mean so much more. So now I really like to make them and that's pretty much all I'm making these days for the preemies.
ReplyDeleteSo beautiful and so sad. You have a strong heart to be able to knit something so caring.
ReplyDeleteIt's beautiful as is your heart.
ReplyDeleteTracy, that outfit is just wonderful! (I do love that hat pattern and have used it myself a few times!) I remember feeling so squeamish at first about doing bereavement items, but it doesn't bother me anymore. It's just a part of life. Nice job!
ReplyDeleteVery sweet and beautiful. I know it will be appreciated. The pattern is lovely.
ReplyDeleteThat is so beautiful and touching. I'm sure every parent who is hurting appreciates these things more than we can know.
ReplyDeleteThe gown is darling.
ReplyDeleteThe skirt and hat look feathery - like angel wings...
Such a lovely outfit!! I'm so thankful that my preemie boys made it! It helps me to make things for others who aren't as fortunate, as it could have so easily been me in need. Thank God that we can put our talents to such meaningful use:~)
ReplyDeleteTracy the set is breath-taking. Is the hat one of your patterns? I love the yarn color you have chosen.
ReplyDeleteThis so so beautiful. This should bring some comfort to the family who gets.
ReplyDeleteYour work is beautiful. You're inspiring me to start making gowns again.
ReplyDeleteHi
ReplyDeleteI have been trying all night to make that little hat since it's a pattern on my site and there isn't a photo, and my hat just does not look like that! Yours is gorgeous.
I am going to keep knitting but I wonder if my initial count was off, or if I am YO in the purl side, wrong somehow. I don't have that nice long 'loop' you have.
Any pointers?

Bev,
ReplyDeleteIt's been a while since I've made this hat, but one thing I know I do is slip my stitch purl-wise when the pattern says Sl 1. Maybe that's the difference. If you are ending up with the correct number of stitches when you YO on the purl side, I don't know how you could be doing that wrong or differently than I do. Good luck. Feel free to email me at woolwinder(at)gmail(dot)com if you have any other questions.
