007 Snap a Dozen Days

Spun by Hand

December is the month I first learned to use a spinning wheel. A year ago, I asked for and received a wheel for Christmas. My first time using it produced yarn that lumpy and uneven, though functional. Over the year, I've practiced and improved.

My preferred way to spin wool is to pick out some roving, sit down at the wheel, and just see what comes from it. There is little planning for me and I like it that way.

I don't think I'll ever be very technical about my spinning. I'm sure it would be beneficial, but I don't care to know the angle of twist or to count the rotations of the wheel to get my plying just right.

I enjoy spinning "freestyle". And if you know me well, you are probably surprised by this. Normally I'm a by-the-book, follow-the-recipe type of person.

But, with spinning I have a carefree attitude, because I've learned that even the most unlovely yarn can be knitted into a thing of beauty.

  2. Your spinning has come a long way. I am like you, I don't count the whirl per what ever. I just spin because it relaxes me and I really just enjoy it. I suppose it is good if you are going to do a heavy duty project where you need to know, but basically I spin because it brings me joy.

  3. Your spinning looks great! I love the colors that you've chosen. I tend to spin a lot like you, but I usually have an idea of what kind of yarn I want.

I like your style of spinning and your spinning looks really good. Someone recently asked what kind of "draw" I was doing. Was I doing a long draw? I said I didn't know, but it worked for me.

  5. That's how I spin, but it's how I do most things;-) I remember when you bought Fish Lake. It turned out beautifully!

  7. Those are all gorgeous yarns! I am just like you, I just let the roving become what it's going to be and then decide on a project later. I think it would get too stressful if I tried to spin a specific yarn for a specific project. But I might try that sometime too ;o)

  8. I spin the same way. If I try to keep count I get all messed up and then it's frustrating and not enjoyable. Absolutely beautiful stuff, Tracy.
