Chenille Washcloths

Knitted Luxury for the Bath

Classic Washcloth
The Knitter's Book of Yarn
Yarn: Crystal Palace Cotton Chenille
Needles: US 4

According to the designer, the key is to use a smaller needle than the yarn requires, and then machine wash and dry the cloth to tighten the fabric even more. It was a little hard on the hands to use size 4 needles with this yarn, but not too bad. My gauge was off and I should have gone down one needle size smaller, but I knew I could never manage that, so I just adjusted the pattern instead. Really, it's such a simple design, you don't even need a pattern at all.

Reverse-Bloom Flower Washcloth
Weekend Knitting
Yarn: Crystal Palace Cotton Chenille
Needles: US 6 Circular (16") and DPNs

For those of you who have not tried this pattern yet, the flower shape is achieved by knitting the garter stitch petals separately and then joining them together in the round. To finish, you work in stockinette stitch, with gradual decreases, to the center.

ETA: Thanks, Jean for locating the free pattern for the flower washcloth.

  1. The one and only washcloth/dishcloth that I have ever knit was in my beginner knitting class. I have not done another one since. I guess I need to get on the bandwagon and give them another try. I love the flower washcloth. That's clever.

They look great! That flower one is also in the Winter 2003 of Interweave Knits. I think it was online at one point but I don't see it any more.

    Peace,
    Jean

  6. I have never knit with cotton chenille, but seeing your cloths makes me want to order some! They're lovely, and your photographs are magazine worthy.

I'm fascinated by the flower washcloth pattern. What a neat idea, joining the petals in the round.

Weekend Knitting is on my some day wishlist. :-)

Cute! Isn't is fun to make the flower washcloth? I made one for my daughter and she loved it.

  8. Both your washcloths are lovely! I like making the flower washcloth - it's been one of my "staple" new baby gifts, along with a bottle of baby wash and hand lotion for the new mom.

  10. Your pictures really do look like a magzine spread.

I've had Weekend Knitting for quite a while and been intrigued by the washclothes, but for some reason haven't tried them. I guess I need to buy some chenille.
