There were some good suggestions:
- Turn A Square - interesting decreases
- Koolhas - lattice cable motif
- Habitat - great cables
- Fisherman's Watch Cap - perfect name for John, classic styling
- Soaring Eagles - really cool!
- Mountain Man Hat - rugged, good looking
This is what I cooked up.
Pattern:
I started with the Cabled Headband from The Knitter's Book of Yarn, picked up stitches around one edge, knit until it seemed right and then finished with decreases inspired by Knit A Square.
Needles: US 7
Yarn: El Coyote Ranch 60% Wool, 40% Mohair
Color: Dark Gray
John tried the hat on last night and said with a smile, "It's just what I wanted."
Since I didn't use any of the light gray yarn, I have a little more "cooking" to do. Maybe something for me...
Fantastic! I love how you improvised and came up with a really great hat.
ReplyDeleteThat is fabulous! How cool to cobble to patterns together and come up with something so unique.
ReplyDeleteThat's fantastic! I'm really impressed with your ability to work those patterns together.
ReplyDeleteAs they say, "Necessity is the mother of invention!". It's a very handsome hat!
ReplyDeleteI want to see John modeling. :) Great hat! I have "turn a square" in my queue. I'd like to make it for my nephew.
ReplyDeletefabulous!! You are so very clever to cook up this pattern :-) I love when that kind of thing works.
ReplyDeleteAWESOME! Now he needs to model it for us! :o)
ReplyDeleteTracy, you are quite ingenious. I don't think I would have been able to improvise so well...but the hat turned out superb. The main thing is that John liked it, right? How about a matching one for you?
ReplyDeleteJohn's hat looks like a prefect match for him. It is nice to see how you matched the two styles and made them work so well.
ReplyDeleteYes I think you should make up a hat for yourself. Can't wait to see what you cook up :)
Wow! I'm so impressed. I have ventured into making up my own pattern yet, but you did amazing...and he thought it was just right!
ReplyDeleteIt's perfect - and obviously it's perfect for him! Now can you get a picture of him wearing it when the weather is cool enough?
ReplyDeleteOoooh, I like it!
ReplyDeleteYou are a great "cook" with yarn and needles. Nice job.
Wow! You are one talented knitter! I would be so scared of messing up trying to improvise my own pattern, let alone combining two.
ReplyDeleteI ♥ the results!
Amazing hat - now you need to knit one for yourself!! I love cable knit stitches - so intricate and beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThat is an awesome looking hat, Tracy! I hope to some day be a good enough knitter that I can do what you did. :-)
ReplyDeleteGreat hat!
ReplyDeleteI stopped in a while back to see you were safely home and left a comment, but for some reason it didn't "stick". So.. a belated welcome back home and so glad that the worst of the storm missed your area.
Loved the shell photos, and your t-shirt looks great.
Wow! That's amazing. The hat turned out just terrific. I'm so glad he liked it!
ReplyDeleteThe hat has great balance and looks quite celtic. Have you looked at this blog for patterns, she has some beautiful ones. http://smariek.blogspot.com/ Her previous posts are in English and I love her pattterns - the Persephone scarf was her design. Also another blog with great hat patterns is http://kodymayknits.blogspot.com/
ReplyDeleteall of these patterns are free.
That is an inspiration of a hat. It looks as though it would fit comfortably without being too large in the crown. Hope it gets may years of wear.
ReplyDeleteI like your hat better than the pattern you linked; the cable is more to my taste. It's a very successful project!
ReplyDeleteAnd what a great "chef" you are! Wonderful hat and cable stitch pattern.
