Foolproof

All I have today is one tiny hat, but it's a new pattern for me and has never been featured on Wool Windings before.

Pattern: Foolproof Baby Hat by Clara Parkes
Source: The Knitter's Book of Yarn
Needles: US 7 straight
Yarn: Lion Brand Cotton-Ease
Color: Pistachio (discontinued)
Size: Preemie 3-5 lbs

The stitch pattern in this hat is mistake rib--a simple stitch with plenty of texture and a fair amount of stretch which works well for a hat.

The original hat has a folded brim, but I decided I didn't need the extra bulk for my preemie version. I also went down one needle size to reduce the circumference.

This hat is knitted flat and seamed, though the stitch pattern can be adjusted to work in the round. Find out how here (Ravelry link) and see a two-color version of this hat being worn by the cutest model ever. I promise it will put a smile on your face...and you might just have to knit your own Foolproof Baby Hat.

  1. Stitch definition is wonderful! I haven't read the book but seen a lot of good reviews. I've knit more on the wool soaker. I'm almost to the grafting so probably 80% done if not more.

  3. Ahh, Mistake Rib is so squishy and nice. It'll be perfect for the preemie hat and leaving off the fold-up length is a good choice, in my opinion. Sweet. :)

  4. It's beautiful! Is that similar to the brioche stitch?

  5. Ha, I have that book and I didn't even notice that pattern in it. It's very cute and it looks very stretchy and comfy.

  6. What a sweet little hat, and the color is so great for this time of year. I have some of that yarn (same color) in my stash. It hadn't occurred to me to knit a baby hat from it. I will now!

Your links eventually led me to pictures of the patterns throughout that book. I saw a number of things in it that I'd like to knit, so that book's going on my wish list! I've already knit the Maine Morning Mitts from the book, as that pattern is available free online. :-)

  7. Beautiful hat (and booties). You do such lovely work. I've got to get back to the preemie knitting, too, you've inspired me once again.

  10. Fabulous! A new pattern I can add to my list of hats to knit for the babies. I haven't knit on them in ages. I have so many projects lined up I am hoping to make my goal of 100 by the end of the year. The booties are adorable. I am sorry I forgot to comment on them the other day.
