P is for Pelican

It's not always easy to photograph a pelican up close. However, this one was very cooperative.

And so were these.

Sometimes I can sneak up on them in the kayak without spooking them, but I'm limited by the zoom on my pocket camera (I'm not brave enough to take the good camera out on the water).

Most of the time they fly away before I can get very close. And even with a decent telephoto lens, they are too far away to capture much detail.

There was one pelican in the flock that stayed behind so I tried to get closer.

But eventually he sensed my presence.

That's close enough.

See ya!

  1. I haven't seen pelicans since I was visiting Seattle. I remember a group of kids (they thought) were giving them anti-acid tablets and it made them explode or something. There were SO MANY that it was sad but the population was huge the seagulls were taking over. Looks like you have just the right amount. No Pelicans here. Just birds.

  4. In the spring, it is common to see white pelicans flying overhead here in Wyoming. I don't have a clue of their destination, but I have never seen one in any body of water around here.

  7. Great pics ! Pelicans are the funniest birds. I can remember feeding them in FLorida when we'd visit my grandmother - a big thrill for a little kid from the midwest!

  13. As always - the pictures are spectacular. I think I need a beach house at Matagordo! These pictures bring back that childhood rhyme -

What a funny thing is a pelican. It's beak can hold more than it's belly can.
