Knot Again

I brought a couple of knitting projects to Matagorda to work on just in case it rained or got too hot during the day to be outside. As it turned out, the rain fell at night and temperatures were cooler than normal for this time of year, so only a few inches were added to the second sock of a pair I started some time ago.

The plan is for the stripes on these socks to match.

I've learned to take good notes on the first sock in order to achieve matched stripes on the second one. It's important to know exactly where to cast on in the color sequence and where to start the heel and the toe. Once the second sock is cast on correctly, everything usually falls into place, though I make sure to check the stripes as I knit especially at the heel and toe.

This time when I compared stripes just before the heel, I discovered a problem with the yarn. It appears something happened in the dyeing process and one section of blue is not as long as it should be. See where the red stripe (on the needle) is starting too early?

And then I ran into another snag--a break in the yarn.

Looks like I may need to revise my matching stripe plan.

  1. Doh! How frustrating after being so careful and getting everything lined up perfectly! Hope you find a new plan that pleases you. :-)

Nice socks all the same :D

I love the colors of the yarn. I know it can be frustrating when you have planned things, and they still insist on going their way! My way of looking at it is that imperfection is what makes human creations so touching.

  4. Hang in there! I had the same thing happen and I still haven't gone back to that sock to see if I can get the second one to match. I feel your pain.

  5. I can't even begin to tell you how obsessive I am about this myself. It drives me so crazy that lately I pretty much stick to only solids, or very long color changes (like my favorite MegaBootStretch yarn), or buying yarns that just have colors splashed all over place (like SocksThatRock, for example).
I cannot wait to see how you work this out! Maybe I will learn something new!

  6. The socks are fabulous and even if the second one is off by a row it will be fine.

  7. I doubt I get much done this weekend either. Sometimes I have to remind myself to put down the knitting and enjoy what's going on around me. It is easy to do both but sometimes you miss out on stuff or don't get as involved as you should be.

I've never tried to match up socks. I'm more a fraternal twin gal.

  8. Ack! Don't you just hate it whne the yarn has a break or knot in it? It's amazing how perfectly matched the socks were up to that point. That is gorgeous yarn!

  9. It may be frustrating, but either way they're going to be gorgeous socks.

  10. I hate finding a break in the sock yarn - and it seems to happen more often when I've decided to make the sock stripes match!

The socks are still beautiful - and the shells set the colors off nicely!
