K is for Kayak

John gave me a kayak for Christmas. I named it Matagorda Bluebird.

His kayak is named Spot after the spot on the tail of a redfish. We enjoy exploring the estuaries, bays, lakes and beaches of Matagorda, Texas in our boats.

John has his boat rigged up for fishing, with every conceivable device known to a kayak fishermen, except a GPS fish finder, which will be coming one day, I'm sure.

I take a simpler approach and pack lightly, usually bringing water, snacks, camera and sometimes a sock on the needles...you know, just in case.

We recently paddled our kayaks across the mouth of the Colorado River to the beach on the other side. We call it The Wild Beach. The fishing proved to be good off the jetty and I had the entire beach to myself to search for shells. Without our kayaks, we wouldn't have been able to get there as it is not accessible by car.

We've had lots of fun kayaking together and I look forward to many more paddle trips in the future. This is possibly the best Christmas present John has ever given me...although, there was that spinning wheel the year before...

  1. I have never kayaked before. I never really had any desire to try it until I read your post. I can imagine the serenity you must find paddeling the shores.
    Have a fantastic weekend!

  2. Love the name of your kayak! I'd love to do more kayaking once the kids get older. Glad that you both enjoy it so much!

  3. You guys are just awesome! The closest I get to your life is out at camp where I can canoe (thought not very well since I do it once a year)out in the lake. I pretend like I know what I'm doing but I don't really. :) I put a package in the mail today. I only made 1 soaker but maybe I'll get a chance later on this summer to make more. Now that I know someone who will use them.

  4. I think many of us envy your life, Tracy. I have another online friend who's husband bought her a kayak this past year (for Christmas, too, I think). Actually, this looks like something I can see my husband and I enjoying together. Maybe someday, if we get to move to an area near places to use one.

  5. Smith has been talking about a kayak (or two). We have so many lakes around here that we could have some fun. You two sure know how to spend a fun weekend!

  10. Wow! This brings back happy memories of kayaking around the quaint little town of Oriental, NC where the Neuse River meets the Pamlico Sound. I wonder if it's still the same (it's been 30 years.... I bet it has changed). We used to get fish heads from the fish market and use them for crab bait. We caught enough to feed an army! Thanks for the trip down memory lane! :) Joan

  11. Wow, that looks fantastic! I have always wanted to kayak, but I really don't live very close to water (I mean water that you would want to go near). I went canoeing last year on vacation with my hubby for the first time I can remember in my life, it was great.

I've tagged you over at my blog, stop by if you'd like to play along. :-)

  12. You two are an adventuresome pair--that is wonderful! And I like how you named your kayaks...that's right up my street, I always name things! I've never been kayaking before either. Boats yet, but not a kayak. A kayak for two sounds very romantic... Happy weekend ((HUGS))
