Irish Hiking Scarf

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
This one's been finished for some time, but I've been slow to post it. John wore it last night and gave it a thumbs up. Here are the details:

Pattern: Irish Hiking Scarf (Love those free patterns!)
Started: December 17, 2005
Finished: December 31, 2005
Yarn: Jo Sharp Silkroad Tweed (4 balls) 85% Wool, 10% Silk, 5% Cashmere
Needles: US size 8 and a cable needle
Notes:

I considered making the cables without a cable needle, but found that I like using one. It doesn't seem to slow me down and doesn't get in my way. I find it to be a useful tool (I'm probably in the minority here).

This yarn knit up nicely for this scarf. I used all four balls (104 yds per ball) to get a scarf that measures approximately 60" in length.

This would be a good pattern for someone just learning to knit cables. It is simple and easy to memorize and by the time you finish the scarf you'll be an old pro at it.

  2. That is just beautiful. You did a wonderful job. I like doing the cables without the cable needle, but sometimes it does get a little sticky, LOL. That's what I love about knitting, so many paths to get to the same destination, you can't take the wrong one!

  3. I've never tried making a cable without a needle, but I do just use a spare DPN instead of a cable needle, and I like it.

The scarf turned out beautifully; I'm glad your husband approves!

I used a toothpick for my cables on my IHS because I have somehow misplaced about six cable needles. heh It was just perfect.

And I really love the color here! Very masculine and I'm sure it's just the perfect thing to take the chill off when a coat is too much in the Texas weather. :)

  6. The scarf is warm but not too heavy and is definitely not scratchy. I love it and it makes me look Celtic!
    Love you JHB

  7. I love this scarf! I made one last year for the Dulaan Project. I use a cable needle without any trouble too. Am making slow progress on dear hubby's wool vest as I feel an overwhelming urge to use softer yarn to make small hats/booties:D

  8. Very nice! I would love to try cables but for now, I need to stick to my socks! Anything but plain-old knitting seems a bit scary to me!

  10. Love the scarf, I agree, using the cable needle is okay with me. Yes, I recommend the book "Handknit Holiday", there is such a nice variety of patterns. Get it from Amazon.com and buy a used one to save a few bucks.
